Sisters Sarah George and Helen Sparrow open the first Abraxas Cookshop in Weedon, Northamptonshire at the Heart of the Shires in 1996. Since then, Abraxas has grown to include shops in Rugby, Northampton, and Banbury. In each of our shops the customer will find a comprehensive range of culinary equipment to suit everyone, from the beginner to the experienced chef. We are proud to be a family-owned and run business. Our commitment to customer service is unrivalled and our visitors can always be assured of a warm welcome with friendly, professional staff on hand to assist.

Abraxas CookshopIn 2004, the sisters found the current Banbury building in a very run-down condition but with great potential. Built in 1867, this unique building, listed and in a conservation area on the marketplace, necessitated a complete restoration. Opened in June 2005, Abraxas Banbury has enjoyed positive customer feed-back. The usual extensive and comprehensive range of cookware including knives, bakeware, storage, gadgets, utensils, textiles and work stations are displayed on the first floor. Downstairs in the vaulted basement, we have our China & Glass section, including Emma Bridgewater pottery, dinnerware, glassware and table-top accessories together with a working coffee machine area where customers may `test-drive’ the equipment and sample the result! Come have a look at our award-winning displays!

Our Banbury shop

The biggest renovation challenge yet, our Banbury shop was discovered in June 2004 in a very run-down condition. Built in 1867, this unique building, listed and in a conservation area, necessitated a complete restoration. Opened in June 2005, Abraxas Banbury has enjoyed positive customer feed-back. Local people were pleased to see this once dilapidated building transformed into a thriving retail business.

The Charity

All proceeds from sales go to help run the Katharine House Hospice, which provides first class palliative care to Banbury and the surrounding area.

What do they do?

Katharine House Hospice delivers healthcare called specialist palliative care, for patients and their families. It delivers this care in any setting including within the hospice building, within the patient’s home and in the Horton Hospital.

Specialist palliative care is for those who have a diagnosis of any illness such as heart failure or cancer, which is advanced and therefore cannot be cured.

The purpose of palliative care is to help the patient live as fully and comfortably as possible in the last period of life by focusing on their needs. It also aims to support their family, both practically and emotionally, with all aspects of caring for someone they love.

We therefore offer holistic care. This care addresses physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs. Each patient and family is unique and so we make every effort to deliver that holistic care with an individual focus.

We work alongside other health and social care professionals including GPs. Our care is free of charge.
