SH Jones Wine Merchant

S H Jones WinesSH Jones Wine Merchant

S H Jones Wines was established in Banbury in 1848.  Since the beginning a large proportion of the company’s business has been supplying the on-trade, and we continue to serve pubs, hotels and restaurants in a large area around Banbury.

The company took over the current High Street premises in 1910, and opened two further shops in Bicester and Leamington in the late 1990s.  There is now a second outlet in Banbury, the Cellar Shop, attached to our large warehouse on the Tramway Estate.  As well as our extensive range of wines, the shops also stock a large range of spirits and liqueurs, and a variety of local bottled ales.  All our staff receive accredited training from the WSET, the Wines and Spirits Educational Trust.

Faliero ‘Miliasso’ Langhe Nebbiolo 2012

This was a very exciting find! Nebbiolo from its homeland of Piedmont, NW Italy, with a little bit of bottle age for less than £10; surely some mistake. No mistake, and it’s rather good! More approachable at a younger age than most Barolo and Barbaresco (the iconic expressions of the grape), this still has that fabulous combination of fruit, spice and savoury notes on the nose, leading onto a warm palate of spiced plum and cherry fruit with well integrated tannins, a peppery/leathery kick and a delightful texture.

Was £14.99, Now £9.99

Alvi’s Drift Viognier

Viognier from Worcester???? Worcester, South Africa that is, and an absolute belter it is too!

The nose is typical of the variety, white peach, apricot and delicate musky notes; expressive but restrained and elegant at the same time. Nicely ripe and with a pleasing, delicately viscous texture, the crisp limey acidity lends balances and adds to its versatility when it comes to food pairing – try with spicy Thai fish cakes, creamy curries or spiced roasted butternut squash. The current 2014 vintage garnered 2 gold medals at South Africa’s Michelangelo International Wine Awards 2014.

Was £8.49, Now £7.49

Alverdi Sangiovese

There’s a trio of wines from Alverdi on offer (a lovely Pinot Grigio & a rosé are the others), but it’s the Sangiovese that stands out as over-delivering on the quality/price ratio. Ripe black cherry and black berry fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a balsamic twang. And it’s a pleasingly modest 12% ABV. Perfect with all manner of pasta dishes, it also excels at BBQs.

Was £6.99, Now £5.99

Innocent Bystander Pink Moscato

Lummy, what a treat! This gently effervescent, delicately sweet Australian rosé, made from Moscato, is nothing short of dangerous – like a posh alco-pop if you will – 5.5% and redolent of cherry, rhubarb and peach fruit. Frothy and frivolous, maybe, but utterly divine. Find an excuse, shut the door, turn off the phone and enjoy. You could even use a straw!

Was £10.99, Now £8.99

Look what I’ve found!

Rummaging about in the warehouse recently we stumbled across some magnums of claret, which was nice! The 2009 and 2010 vintages in Bordeaux were outstanding, by the way. Very limited stock.

Château Talbot, St. Julien 2006 & 2008

Château Leoville-Barton, St. Julien 2007 & 2009 Château Petit Village, Pomerol 2008 & 2010 Château Gazin, Pomerol 2006 & 2009

£75.95 & £82.95 respectively £109.60 & £171.00 £93.40 & £96.70 £122.00 & £182.40
This month we’ll end with a couple of sparkling wines. One, the easy-going Villa Granda Prosecco, offers up appealing pear and peach-skin flavours on a soft and gentle palate. A bargain at £7.99, this looks even sharper if you buy it in 6’s and save 10%.The other, Moncontour Vouvray Brut, is a sparkling Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley, produced by the Méthode Traditionnelle*, and is a fabulous melange of windfall apple and lemon zest flavours, with a backnote of almond and minerals. Utterly charming and elegant, this is as good served with fish or seafood as it is served on its own at a celebration, or as an aperitif. £13.99, with 10% off when bought in 6’s or as part of a mixed case. Marvellous! *Méthode Traditionnelle is the name given to the process of producing the fizz in Champagne & some sparkling wines by inducing a second fermentation inside the bottle, a byproduct of which is carbon dioxide.

What to expect other than great food …

QuackersPinto opened in November 2010 in what had previously been a photography studio, which meant that internally the space was subdivided into lots of small rooms, and at first it was bloomin’ difficult to appreciate its size and scale.  However, following some good old Loungers sledgehammer action we’ve been able to reveal a very spacious and quirky space.  Pinto comprises a typical Victorian shop unit to the front and a surprisingly large room with very high ceilings to the rear.  With eighty covers internally and a further thirty in the courtyard terrace to the rear she’s a bit of a tardis is this one.

Having a party?  We’d love to play host …

You can book a large party and we never disappoint.  From a quiet table for two or something a little larger to an office catchup or a quick meet up before going on for the evening, we can cater for any occasion.

Pinto Longue

Interesting Fact

Whilst stripping out the unit we uncovered some old Victorian tiles on the wall which is now in our back bar.  Suffice to say we opted to keep the tiles and after some good old fashioned elbow grease and general TLC they came up a right treat.  On the opening night a chap came in and told us that his father used to work in the building when it was a butchers many moons ago (hence the tiles).

A sneak preview … yummy!

What’s your poison?

Banbury Old Town Party

Old Town Party Saturday 12th July 2014

Keep this Saturday free as you are all invited to Banbury’s 5th Old Town Party, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

To coincide with the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Banbury Old Town is going back in time to the 1940s. Wander along the streets, lanes and Market Place that make up the Old Town area, and see shop keepers in 1940s dress and themed shop windows as the sounds of big band and swing music fill the air.

It will be opened by the town mayor at 11:30am and continues all day until 4:00pm.

Old Town Party 3

With every turn as you walk along this historic market town you may bump into Rimski on his bicycle piano, The Hoola Hooper Angie Mack, plus balloon modellers, face-painters, or the stilt walkers: The Golfer, The Landgirl, and The  Spiv.  Listen to music from singing trio The Sceptics, Sue and her Swinging Syncopators, Betsy Harmony and her wartime music, the Linden Players….and much more! There will be traditional 1940s art and games for children to join in. Banbury Museum will provide materials to make a brass rubbing of the tokens inlaid in Parsons Street and provide head phones with sound tracks of local people telling stories from second world war and display covered with photos of Banbury in the 1940s including Spencers,  Health Care at the Horton  in 1940’s  pre NHS,  and bombing at the lock. Banbury Sound will be present in the morning as Kirsty Leahy presents the breakfast show from the town.

A traditional 15th century pub

A crackling fire, fine food and real ale will perfectly round off your visit to the historic town of Banbury.

A warm welcome awaits you at Ye Olde Reindeer Inn, which dates back to the 15th century. It is a characterful and atmospheric pub where once Oliver Cromwell held court arranging future battles.  Its high beams, wooden floors and benches and the famous Globe Room create a unique atmosphere.

As well as sampling our local real ales, wines and spirits, we offer an extensive menu created by our experienced chefs that’s both affordable and delicious.

Ye Olde Reindeer Inn

With our daytime bar menu available from noon until 3pm, 7 days a week, and a daily specials board, we offer the perfect way to unwind after a morning of shopping.  And if it’s a Sunday we serve a Sunday Roast from the chef’s joint of the day!

Some history ….

Ye Olde Reindeer by Grant Funnell

Ye Olde Reindeer Inn dates back to the 15th century and probably offers the best pub food in the market town of Banbury.  Tables near log fires are particularly popular during the winter months.  A fine range of local ales, wines and excellent spirits compliment a fine menu.

The atmospheric inn is of great local historic importance.  Oliver Cromwell held court in the pub, arranging future battles.  There are high beams, wooden floors and benches and the famous Globe Room, the paneling of which was held at the Victoria and Albert museum until 1946 and has now been returned.  For more details on the English Civil War and the Reindeer Inn’s involvement, scroll further down.

Did we mention our food?

We’re proud of our food menu created by experienced chefs.  It offers exactly what you would expect of the pub but at very affordable prices.  We say, save some pennies for the ale!  Our day time bar menu is available seven days a week from noon until 3pm.  Our ‘Specials’ board is updated daily so pop in while you’re shopping to see what’s on offer.

Our dishes are all prepared to order here at Ye Olde Reindeer Inn, and at our busiest times may result in a short wait. We appreciate your understanding.

We have a policy of sourcing locally as much produce as possible. Our meat is rarebreed and traceable, poultry free range and our fish is delivered daily.

Ye Olde Reindeer

Ye Olde Reindeer history & The Globe Room

The Globe Room had a high ceiling and richly carved panelled walls with pillars, shields, scrolls and cherubs.  Above the panelling was an ornamented frieze covered in a mixture of angels and scrolls.  Surmounting the whole room was a magnificent honeycomb-patterned plaster ceiling rich with flowers, urns and scrolls with mermaid like figures appearing at intervals.  On the east side is a great mullioned window of eight bays, with a carved oak ionic pillar on each side of it and at either end of this wall are carved oak doorways.

King Charles I

King Charles II

It is believed to be very likely that the Globe Room was used regularly by Oliver Cromwell as his headquarters and more interestingly, as a court room to sit in judgement in one of the several Royalist trials that took place during the Civil War. We know this because of an engraving showing him seated behind a desk in front of the great mullioned window with an unfortunate captive in front of him.  A copy of this engraving can be seen in the Globe Room.

It is also thought that Cromwell may have used the Globe Room to plan one or both of the sieges of Banbury Castle that stood on the north side of the Market Place.
