Waterstones – Your Local Bookshop

Waterstones began in 1982 under the aegis of its founder, Tim Waterstone. Over the decades that have followed, we have grown to become an icon of the British cultural landscape, employing over 3000 superb booksellers across over 280 bookshops.

As the last surviving national bookshop chain, under the helmsmanship of Managing Director James Daunt, we are proud to have fought off the perceived threat of e-readers and online competition to begin a programme of active expansion. Recent years have seen fresh shops open around the country and sites either move or be upgraded. With recent openings including Reigate, Clifton and moves to far more attractive locations for our shops in Edinburgh and Manchester’s Trafford Centre, our plans continue to be ambitious.

Perhaps unusually for a national retailer, our branch managers enjoy a high degree of individual autonomy, running their shops to best please their local customers, with only the lightest of central suggested direction. We take enormous pleasure in championing simply good (but sometimes relatively overlooked) books, a principle that began most famously with John Williams’ Stoner, a quiet, intense novel that we turned into a bestseller forty years after its original publication.

Working closely with our bookshops are our efforts online, where at Waterstones.com we are working to bring the very essence of Waterstones to every home and smartphone in Britain. With hugely popular endeavours such as our regular reading update Waterstones Weekly and an ever-increasing offering of exclusive reader offers and signed editions, Waterstones.com is the perfect online companion to our High Street bookshops. Click & Collect – the service that links the two – has grown in tandem with our success, allowing our customers to experience the best of both worlds.

Through our own coffee shops, range of books, our array of gifts and booksellers who genuinely love what they sell, we welcome you to Waterstones.

Forget the internet and impersonal online book browsing; take a few minutes out of your day to relax and enjoy the hunt for a good read.

Our independent bookshop is spread over two floors housing over 25,000 titles, leaving you spoilt for choice in our book-lovers oasis of calm in the heart of Banbury’s Old Town.

We stock practically everything, covering virtually every subject you care to mention. From shiny new paperbacks, hardbacks, leather bound tomes and bestsellers to old and positively antique editions, you name it, we’ve got it.  In the unusual circumstances of not having the book you’re looking for, just tell us what it is and we’ll find it for you – nothing is too much trouble.  Plus, a next day ordering service is available for most new titles.

We’re not just about books

Although that’s our main love, we also stock quirky literary-related gift ideas.

Books And Ink

There is something for everyone.  Oh, and did we mention we’re also members of the Booksellers Association and stockists of National Book Tokens?

An independent bookshop; the shop is a veritable tardis, with two floors and over 25,000 books on hand, and a separate fine art shop and art workshops on the premises too.  You’ll find that our passion for the written word takes over in the shop.

All sorts of books are allowed onto the shelves – you’ll find almost all subjects and definitely all types – old, very old, positively antique, shiny new, hardbacks, paperbacks, leather bindings, bestsellers, really weird things you thought could never have been published; you name it, you’ll find it here. If we don’t have it, and you don’t have the time, then let us find it for you – nothing is too much trouble. – Sam Barnes, owner.

Books and Ink are a stockists of National Book Tokens and a member of the Booksellers Association & the PBFA  – Antiquarian, Old & New Books
