Founded in San Francisco in 1969, Gap has become a leading global brand and first opened its doors in the UK in 1987, being the first store outside of the United States. It is a popular retailer for fashion for all ages: men, women, children and babies, and GapKids is specifically aimed at kids with style. Striving to be ‘one of the world’s greatest places to work’, they have won many awards for fashion and business, including seven times winner of Ethisphere Magazine’s World’s Most Ethical Company.
In 1969, Don Fisher couldn’t find a pair of jeans to fit him. So what did he do? He opened his own store with his wife Doris. The name, ‘Gap’ referred to the ‘generation gap’, which was a term popular in the 60s for describing the differences between people of the younger and older generations. The Fishers’ aim was to create a brand that responded to customers’ needs with integrity and creativity, and that was committed to ethical practices and philanthropic work. They had no idea that the brand would become such a successful, world-wide company. GapKids was first opened in 1986, and has become a popular choice for children’s fashions.
Did you know…?
When they first opened in 1969 a pair of jeans cost around $7. There are about ten miles of their storefront windows around the world. They employ around 136,000 people globally. In 2004 they established a Clean Water Program to monitor the wastewater discharge in the denim laundries. Another programme they introduced is PACE (Personal Advancement, Career Enhancement), which helps to empower female workers in India and Sri Lanka.
